Singapore approves of artificial meat| What is lab grown meat?| Is lab-grown meat the new trend?

This planet is as much ours as it is of the animals, insects and millions other unknown species of creatures. Since we humans are much more evolved than any other being, it becomes our responsibility to see to that, in our chase to evolve and develop further, we don't hurt or misuse the various elements and creatures of the Earth.

This brings us to animal cruelty has been a major issue and many people have been fighting continuously to put an end to it. We can see the live examples of animal cruelty in the slaughter houses.

FACT #1

According to 'the vegan calculator ', 150 billion animals are slaughtered every year for various purposes.

And such statistics don't stop, they keep on increasing rapidly.

Today we are fighting various global problems such as hunger, and it becomes essential we find a way to live in harmony with the environment  as well as be able to eradicate such problems.

Thus, here comes the alternative of lab grown meat or artificial meat.

What is artificial meat?

Artificial meat is different from the orignally obtained meat and is eco-friendly as it does not involve the slaughtering of animals and does not deplete environmental resources like grass, water, and land. The most successful method of lab-grown meat involves harvesting stem cells from cows. Stems cells are the building blocks of almost everything - muscle tissues to organs.

The process:-

This process starts with a few ‘vitro or stem' cells. According to the theory, just one cell can be used to grow an infinite amount of meat.

• The stem cells are acquired (extracted) from a live bovine animal in what scientists claim is a painless procedure.

• After separating the muscle cells and fat cells from the stem cells, the muscle cells are are collected and lab-grown.

• They are put in an artificial environment, and are provided with nutrients like amino acids or carbohydrates.

• Now these cells increase rapidly in number, doubling in roughly every few days.

• The newly formed cells are encouraged to merge together to form tiny myotubes or strips.

• These myotubes then grow into strands that eventually grow into muscle tissue.

• Thus, the resulting tissue can then be harvested, seasoned, cooked and consumed as boneless processed meat.

FACT #2

Artificial meat has lower amounts of saturated fats which are responsible for chronic diseases. Thus it is a much healthier option.

How is lab-grown meat progressing?

▪︎ In 2013, the first lab-grown patty was introduced as a proof that it was possible to grow safe and edible meat without slaughtering a single animal. There was just one problem: the patty had taken two years and over $300,000 to produce.

▪︎But as the years progressed, with further development, here we are in 2020 with Singapore being the first country to approve the sale of a lab-grown meat product. This is the first time cultured meat has been cleared for sale anywhere in the world.

▪︎The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) approved this a few weeks ago.

It is believed that as soon as mass production begins, lab-grown meat will be a more feasible option to satisfy the world's hunger without ruining the environment. Although, the production of cultured meat,at the present, is pretty difficult to scale up.

In conclusion:-

There are many issues to overcome before a full-blown production of artificial meat comes into market. People need to be made aware about climate change crisis, dealing with consumer mistrust, producers of alternative meats facing resistance from traditional meat producers who are firmly set in their businesses, etc. But there's hope as some of the world's biggest companies like Nestlé are already onto the path to produce artificial meat.
